AnchorEvaluation of a Lifestyle and Rehabilitation Programme for Patients with Cancer Following Treatment with Curative Intent

Evaluation of a Lifestyle

Macmillan Cancer Support recently funded a pilot study aimed at evaluating a lifestyle information and exercise programme for people who had finished their cancer treatment. People living in the West Lothian area were invited to attend one of two 12-week programmes run in one of the local gyms. Each session consisted of 45 minutes of exercise, including progressive warm-up exercises, followed by a cardiovascular and muscular endurance component, followed by stretching and relaxation. Afterwards, there was an information session on lifestyle, for example covering topics such as managing stress, healthy eating, financial issues and the importance of breath. Participants were assessed at baseline and on completion of the programme using a range of validated tools.

AnchorOut and About with CanRehab

The CanRehab team have been extremely busy over the spring and summer months running workshops for both fitness experts and allied health professionals.

We have clocked up a number of miles and visited towns the length and breadth of the country from Inverness to Exeter and lots of towns and cities in between including:

Highlands Breast Cancer Association workshops in Inverness and Alness, The Clementine Churchill Hospital London, Marie Curie Hospice Newcastle, Primary Care 2010 Conference NEC Birmingham, University of Ulster, NHS Lothian University Hospital Division, Singleton Hospital Swansea, Newcastle University Centre for Physical Recreation & Sport, Leeds Indoor Cycling Group
.

Hi everyone,

Since CanRehab’s last “enewsletter” I have been extremely busy doing two of life’s most stressful things – moving house and starting a new job, all in the same week!

I started a new teaching appointment at the University of Dundee’s Institute of Sport and Exercise this August. I have also been focusing a lot of my time and effort working on CanRehab’s NVQ Level 4 qualification in cancer and exercise rehabilitation as we hope to launch this qualification early in 2011. The Register of Exercise Professionals(REPs) September journal features an article written by myself entitled “Exercise-Based Cancer Rehabilitation" which highlights the changing attitude towards exercising after cancer diagnosis, where “rest is best” is no longer the best advice.Anchor

I’m now also pleased to announce that Breast Cancer Care’s free exercise DVD which I helped to produce is now available, the feedback I’ve received to date shows that it’s proving extremely popular with both fitness instructors and home exercisers. Recently a project very close to my heart ActiveABC celebrated its first anniversary with the launch of a new website and a facebook page, so now we can all follow what’s happening with the team at ActiveABC in Glasgow.

AnchorI hope that the features in our autumn newsletter will inform, inspire and motivate you to continue promoting the benefits which exercise can bring to the lives of cancer survivors. We would love to hear your comments on our newsletter and any suggestions you may have on how we could improve the content and features in the future. Please email your comments to info@canrehab.co.uk and feel free to forward this “enewsletter” to any of your friends or colleagues who may also be interested in CanRehab.

Best wishes,
Anna

AnchorBreast Cancer Care DVD

Anna has worked with the team at Breast Cancer Care to produce an exercise DVD specifically designed for women wishing to improve their levels of physical activity following breast cancer. The exercises covered in the sessions include: a warm up, pulse raiser, aerobic section, muscular strengthening and finally flexibility and stretches. These exercises can be used and adapted for women with differing levels of fitness. Breast Cancer Care have now confirmed that the DVD is available, to get your free copy please visit the Breast Cancer Care website www.breastcancercare.org.uk/exercise

AnchorActiveABC Active After Breast Cancer
In our last newsletter we featured ActiveABC, the first city wide exercise service for cancer patients, which was successfully launched in Glasgow with the help and support of Dr. Anna Campbell. The ActiveABC programme is now one year old and so far over 70 women have participated, one of whom commented that:

Anchor“I am thoroughly enjoying my exercise classes every Tuesday and Friday  with Frances at Tollcross. So far I have lost over 10 pounds, have got fitter and feel so much better about myself and I sincerely hope that more women can get to know about this excellent initiative” More >

AnchorGrant Awards, Symposia and Conferences
Dr. Anna Campbell along with Dr. Helen Crank from Sheffield Hallam University and Dr. Clare Stevenson from Loughborough University have recently been awarded a grant from BASES, The British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences, to write the Expert Statement on Exercise and Cancer. We’ll have more information on this in our next CanRehab newsletter.

Anna has also been in demand over the last few months as both a keynote speaker and as a presenter at several symposia and conferences across the country. Some of the major events which she attended include:

British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences BASES held their annual conference in Glasgow this September, Dr. Anna Campbell, one of the key speakers, presented a session on changing physical activity behaviour in clinical populations.

Primary Care 2010 Conference at NEC Birmingham earlier this year invited Dr. Anna Campbell to present a session on exercise and cancer survivorship

Consequences of Cancer Treatment Collaborative (CCaT) met at Warwick University in October and invited Dr. Anna Campbell to contribute to a session on the importance of self-management for cancer survivors. This group is co-sponsored by Macmillan and the Department of Health as part of the National Cancer Survivorship Initiative (NCSI). In brief, the CCaTgroup’s focus is improving care for people living with effects of cancer treatment. The group aims to influence services, help bridge the gap between research and practice, and altogether make consequences of treatment a far more visible issue within the UK research and policy agendas.  The 12 members are or have been clinically active as nurses or allied health professionals.

Pfizer UK Foundation held their annual symposium in Glasgow at Oran Mor on the 6th October. The Symposium is one of the ways in which the Foundation provides its community of organisations with a platform to talk about their activities, share their learnings and meet and network with similar organisations. Dr. Anna Campbell spoke about CanRehab and her work in promoting the area of exercise based cancer rehabilitation to both health and fitness professionals.
